CHAMPIONING SUSTAINABLE FUTURES

Daniel Beat MÜLLER

(Norway)

Vice-President (2025-2028), Member of Executive Committee

Professor Daniel Beat Müller is a Professor at the Industrial Ecology Programme within the Department of Energy and Process Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). He currently serves as the (ad interim) Chair of the International Society of Industrial Ecology’s section on Material Flow Analysis – ConAccount. Professor Daniel previously served on the U.S. National Research Council’s Committee on Assessing the Need for a Defense Stockpile and has been a member of the Steering Committee for the Swiss National Science Foundation’s National Research Programme 65 “New Urban Quality” since 2009.

Professor Müller’s research explores the relationship between human needs, associated material and energy flows, and their environmental impacts. Professor Daniel’s work aims to develop strategies that enhance quality of life while minimizing resource constraints and ecological consequences. His projects focus on the transformation of urban systems, including the management of building and infrastructure stocks, and on the analysis of metal cycles at national and global levels to address issues of resource security and sustainability.

A core feature of Professor Müller’s research is its transdisciplinary approach—integrating design, modeling, and decision-making while collaborating with government, industry, and academic partners. This inclusive framework enhances the applicability and societal relevance of his research.

Professor Daniel teaches graduate-level courses in Material Flow Analysis and Systems Analysis of the Built Environment, mentoring students in Industrial Ecology and Civil Engineering.
