Yuanbin SHE
(China)

Professor Yuanbin SHE is a distinguished expert at the National Solid-State Brewing Center, an academician of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, and a professor and Ph.D. supervisor at Zhejiang University of Technology. His academic journey and contributions span over several decades, marking a significant impact in the fields of green chemistry, fine chemicals, and beyond.
In 1984, Professor SHE graduated from Wuhan Institute of Chemical Technology with a Bachelor’s degree. Three years later, in 1987, he earned his Master’s degree in Environmental Chemical Engineering from Beijing University of Technology. His pursuit of academic excellence continued as he obtained a Ph.D. from the School of Chemical Engineering, Dalian University of Technology, in 1997, under the supervision of Academician Yang Jinzong.
Throughout his early career, Professor SHE held various teaching positions at Beijing University of Technology, starting as an assistant in 1987 and progressing to a lecturer from 1990 to 1995 and then to an associate professor from 1995 to 1999. His dedication to research and teaching was recognized in 1998 when he was named a Beijing Higher Education (Young) Academic Leader and selected for the Beijing Science and Technology Rising Star Program. Additionally, in 1999, he was included in the Beijing Cross-Century Talents Program.
Professor SHE’s journey took a significant turn in 1999 when he became a professor at Beijing University of Technology and, shortly after, a Ph.D. supervisor. From 2002 to 2004, he served as the Director of the Mobile Projects at the Chemical Sciences Division of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. This experience further enriched his administrative and research capabilities.
In 2014, a new chapter in Professor SHE’s career began as he joined Zhejiang University of Technology as a professor and Ph.D. supervisor in the College of Chemical Engineering, where he was also appointed as a Canal Distinguished Professor. His leadership roles expanded as he served as the Executive Deputy Dean from 2014 to 2015 and then as the Dean of the College of Chemical Engineering from 2015 to 2019. From 2019 to 2021, he held the position of Party Secretary of the same college.
In 2020, Professor SHE’s responsibilities grew as he was appointed as the Dean of the Zhejiang Institute of Emergency Management. Additionally, in July of the same year, he took on the role of Dean of the Southwest Research Institute of the College of Chemical Engineering, Zhejiang University of Technology. His contributions to the field and his academic prowess were internationally recognized in July 2022 when he was elected as an academician of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts.
Professor SHE’s research focuses on green chemistry and fine chemicals, the design and synthesis of metalloporphyrin biomimetic catalysts, biomimetic catalysis for the selective oxidation of hydrocarbons to synthesize fine chemical intermediates and products, photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide to ethylene, resource utilization of solid waste (waste salt), food safety and authenticity detection and traceability, and the research and development of new technologies and products for emergency management.
Professor SHE’s groundbreaking work in the field of biomimetic catalysis, mimicking the selective oxidation of various hydrocarbons and their side chains to synthesize fine intermediates such as alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, acids, and sulfones, has gained significant momentum. He has received support from 10 national-level projects and holds over 40 authorized invention patents.
Addressing the bottlenecks in food safety testing, such as the inability to detect, accurately measure, or rapidly test for exogenous contaminants like heavy metals, pesticide residues, mold microorganisms, and authenticity markers in premium liquor and tea, Professor SHE has made remarkable progress using a series of visual sensors based on nanoporphyrins and quantum dots.
As of May 2025, according to the official website of Zhejiang University of Technology, Professor SHE had applied for over 170 patents in the United States and China, with over 130 patents granted in the United States, Australia, and China, including 4 US patents and 1 Australian patent. He has hosted over 20 national-level research projects, including 7 key and general projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
Professor SHE’s academic influence extends beyond patents and projects; he has published over 400 SCI academic papers in prestigious journals such as Chem. Soc. Rev. and Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. His commitment to education is also evident, as he teaches undergraduate courses on “Principles and Applications of Green Chemistry,” “Chemical Safety and Environmental Protection,” and “Introduction to Applied Chemistry,” as well as graduate courses on “Advanced Organic Chemistry” for both Ph.D. and master’s students.
Professor SHE emphasizes the importance of a rigorous attitude towards scientific research, encouraging students to observe, record, and summarize meticulously. He has published 3 teaching papers, reflecting his dedication to educational excellence.
Beyond his academic achievements, Professor SHE has made outstanding contributions to promoting original basic research to industrial applications, significantly contributing to the high-quality development of western and ethnic minority regions such as Guizhou. His dedication as an educator and a Communist Party member is evident in his lead-by-example approach, loyal to the party’s cause, and tireless in his educational endeavors.
